Rooted: The Good the Bad and Freedom of Choice
As a reseller for 3DVerkstan Denmark, we have been made aware of a third-party firmware being developed by the X1 Plus team. Initially, there were concerns about the intentions behind this firmware and the potential risks it posed. However, after engaging in discussions with the leading developer of X1 Plus, Joshua, we have come to the conclusion that he is a talented developer with no ill intentions.
While we appreciate the efforts of the X1 Plus team, allowing printers to be rooted and leaving security loopholes open is not ideal for us. Therefore, we have proposed a solution that gives customers the choice to install third-party firmware at their own risk. This choice comes with the understanding that they will waive official support and take full responsibility for security and safety.
To implement this, we will release a new firmware that allows the installation of the X1 Plus firmware. Customers will be required to sign a waiver of warranty and safety responsibility. We cannot guarantee the continued use of the cloud service with third-party firmware, as they are closely coupled systems.
While this solution may not be perfect, it provides customers with the freedom to choose between Bambu Lab firmware and third-party firmware. We will continue to work on developing APIs and SDKs for third-party developers, which will be part of our long-term strategy.
We appreciate the support and assistance of Michael Laws and Joel Telling in facilitating the discussion between the X1Plus team and Bambu Lab. Without their help, this conversation may not have taken place. For more information on this topic, please visit the link below:
